Family Support

We provide personal development programmes to build confidence and feelings of self worth.

Family Centres

Our family centres forge new partnerships within the local community as well as strengthening links with existing ones. We work with parents and children, often combining the work done with both groups to help the development of families using a holistic approach.

Parents/ carers that access our service can develop new skills or strengthen skills they already possess. The range of training and support groups offered gives scope for different ways of learning with a balance of discussion and activity groups.

Our family centres also provide sessional and respite childcare to help support parents/carers who would like to participate in any of our groups.
Below are examples of the various services we provide from our Family Centres in Possilpark, Easterhouse and Girvan.

Parent Training/ Groups

We work intensively to provide family support services that build on the strengths within families to enable them to build on their own potential.
We work alongside parents/carers within family homes and the community to support them to develop the skills and confidence that support positive parenting. Parents/ carers are linked into skills development opportunities, e.g. Mellow Parenting programme; Let’s Get Started, Let’s Get Going (courses that enhance personal development and employability skills).

Our group work, one to one and in the home programmes often focus on parenting skills, home care skills and parent/ child workshops that enhance bonding and attachment. We also provide a range of other classes and groups such as cookery and sewing classes which get parents involved in groups and also assists with their development of social and practical skills.

Health Initiatives

Our Health Development work provides workshops on health and wellbeing illustrating the importance of a healthy lifestyle in the early years of a child’s development. For example budget cookery; oral health awareness classes; healthy bodies, healthy lives, etc.

Our Café Baby in Possilpark is a new breastfeeding initiative for parents, to support breastfeeding. Mothers who are expecting a baby may be starting to think about how they are going to feed their newborn and they may find helpful or comforting to talk to other mothers who are already breastfeeding or even a Health Visitor, who regularly attends our sessions, to get more advice about the benefits of breastfeeding.

School age children also benefit from our health initiatives with Stepping Stones providing information and advice about healthy living and well-being.

Pupil Support

We frequently make ourselves available to school managers in a consultive and supportive capacity, offering guidance and informed support regarding issues concerning pupils and their parents.

Our pupil support aims to develop skills that assist pupils to cope with mainstream education. Our team’s response to referrals from schools is timely and effective. Stepping Stones staff attend and give valuable input to planning programmes and activities to help the children with diverse issues like behaviour and anger management, emotional support, improving social skills, activity-based learning contexts, homework and the development of the ‘homework habit’.

Income Maximisation

We provide a quality Income Maximisation service that tackles the anti poverty agenda so that we can assist families that are affected by poverty and disadvantage.

We deliver Money Management workshops tailored to meet the needs of the attendees, subjects covered include benefit entitlement assessment, assistance in completing application forms; identifying routes out of poverty; minimizing and preventing debt; links to employment and training; partnership working.

We use our holistic approach to meeting the needs of families – this means that as well as considering issues with benefits we will also make referrals or direct families to other services, e.g. childcare; family support; Occupational Therapy; Trading Standards.

As of 2009, our Girvan Family Connections income maximisation project has supported the local community to gain an annual equivalent increase in income of £4.3 million since the income maximisation provision began in September 2000.

Community Development

Using a community development approach the Children’s Inclusion Partnership (CHIP) facilitates children’s participation work and capacity building with parents. In both cases CHIP aims to enable those taking part to: – enjoy the activities in themselves – bring about practical changes with and for children – speak out to decision-makers – influence local services or policy.

By networking with and creating new partnerships and continuing to work closely with existing partners we have been given the opportunity to play a role in the planning and design of new communal areas situated in the communities that surround our projects and family centres.
